I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes about a year after pancreatic surgery. I was at work acting confused and my friend took me to the emergency room. I had a blood sugar over 500. I made several trips to the emergency room where my diabetes was treated until I could see an endocrinologist. I was started on metformin and insulin. I still couldn’t get my blood sugars controlled until I started the insulin pump. It’s been about six years and it’s been a hard road.
With the support of my family and friends, I have been able to survive and get better control of my blood sugars. I think being a person with diabetes has been the most scariest thing of my life. It took me forever to realize that it can’t be reversed and I will always be a person with diabetes.
But what I’ve mostly learned about it is that it does help me to be a healthier person because I’m more aware of what I eat and I’m more healthy. I try to stay positive about it, even though it is a struggle, and it is very stressful to live diabetes. Thanks for listening to my story.
