My name is Tonya, and at 56 years old, health is deeply personal to me. Diabetes has shaped my family’s story in painful ways. My mother passed away at the age of 57 due to complications from diabetes. At this age, I cannot ignore the weight of that reality. It has forced me to reflect not only on my family history, but also on the choices I make for my own future.

A few years ago, I was diagnosed as prediabetic. At the time, I understood that it was serious, but I did not fully grasp the urgency. Life was busy, and because I did not feel sick, I brushed it off. Prediabetes felt like a warning I could deal with later. Unfortunately, “later” has a way of arriving quickly. Instead of allowing anxiety to consume me, I chose to take action and joined a fitness club.

By January 2026, my efforts began to reflect in measurable ways. My A1C had decreased to 6, and I had lost 10 pounds. While the journey is not over, those numbers represent progress, discipline, and hope. They are proof that small, consistent changes can lead to meaningful results—and that fear, when faced head-on, can transform into strength.
