Camp Aldersgate is a weeklong residential camp program for children with diabetes. It was established in 1947 and serves 55 children and teens each year. Campers enjoy zip-lining through the trees, pool parties, fishing, archery, and more!

Camp offers children with diabetes the opportunity to learn how to enjoy a healthy, active lifestyle while managing their diabetes. At Camp Aldersgate, children are surrounded by people who face the same challenge of living with diabetes, from fellow campers to adult staff members.

Our long-term collaboration with our host site, Camp Aldersgate, has led to our camp's continued success. Camp Aldersgate provides medical camp staff including nurses, endocrinologists, pharmacists, social workers, psychologists, and registered dietitian nutritionists. Many professionals donate their time and services for camp and provide our campers and their families with the peace of mind and support needed to learn better diabetes self-management skills. As a result, our campers leave camp with increased self-confidence, independence, and improved diabetes management.

Camp Director: Rachel Wacker

Rachel Wacker is a camp director living in Texas. Rachel has been in the camp industry since the turn of the century—working across the country. She believes that camp is for everyone and works to break down access barriers to help folks find their camp. Rachel is excited to help people at camp build skills to better prepare them for life outside the camp world. She works to make camp a safe, authentic space for people to learn about themselves, make friends, and have fun! When she is not at camp, Rachel enjoys hiking, reading, traveling, playing trivia with friends, and anything in the water!

 Medical Director: Dr. Mike

Dr. Mike has been volunteering at camp for 13 years and likely lives closer to camp than anyone else. When not volunteering, Dr. Mike plays the saxophone, rides a unicycle (though turns remain a challenge), and enjoys watercolor painting. ADA Camp is a lifeline for children living with diabetes to develop the critical skills needed to thrive while managing their diabetes. Attending camp helps children develop social skills, self-respect, and lifelong friendships. Campers meet others just like them while encouraging independence, building self-confidence, and gaining an awareness of a healthy lifestyle through education, nutrition, exercise, blood glucose (blood sugar) management, and emotional wellbeing.

*Financial Assistance Available. No child will ever be turned away from camp due to cost. If the camp fee is a roadblock for your family, the American Diabetes Association® offers financial assistance. Nearly half of our families receive financial assistance to cover part or the full cost of camp.
