On October 4, the American Diabetes Association® (ADA) is hosting its flagship fundraising event of the year at Morgan’s Wonderland in San Antonio to raise awareness and provide critical support for those affected by diabetes. Step Out®: San Antonio will bring together the diabetes community, volunteers, and advocates for a walk for people of all ages and abilities.
The walk benefits diabetes research, education, management, and prevention, supporting the ADA’s mission to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. Increasingly, this includes those living with obesity, as the Obesity Association™, a division of the ADA, expands outreach and education.
“As someone newly joining the ADA team and personally connected to the mission, I know firsthand the challenges that come with a type 2 diabetes diagnosis. This event is a powerful opportunity to raise awareness and share strategies that empower individuals to make sustainable lifestyle changes. Together, we’re building a healthier San Antonio—one conversation, one connection, and one step at a time,” said Shataria Greene, the ADA’s executive director in South Central Texas, serving the Houston, San Antonio, and Austin markets.
The festivities will begin with music and a Wellness Village, leading into an opening ceremony to celebrate those coming together to walk for better health, a cure, and a brighter future. The community is invited to participate in a morning filled with engaging activities for everyone, wear red ADA gear, and bring banners and signs to show support for the cause.
Step Out Walk will also provide valuable diabetes resources and experts on-site to provide advice on diabetes management and prevention for attendees.
This year’s Step Out Walk is sponsored by Novo Nordisk, The Boehringer Ingelheim and Eli Lilly and Company Alliance, and University Health.
The Boehringer Ingelheim and Eli Lilly and Company Alliance stated, “We are proud to support the American Diabetes Association’s Step Out Walk: San Antonio. We look forward to the impact attendees can make by improving early detection and diagnosis of diabetes and related conditions, including cardiovascular and chronic kidney disease, and helping those at risk live healthier lives.”
Diabetes isn't just a disease—it's an epidemic. Over 38 million Americans are living with diabetes and its devastating consequences. Nearly 3 million adults in Texas, or 12% of the adult population, have diagnosed diabetes. Every year, an estimated 228,000 adults in the state are diagnosed with diabetes. Events like this are crucial to raise awareness and provide resources to support those living with diabetes.
Registration for the event is free. To learn more about the 2025 Step Out: San Antonio and register, visit /sowsanantonio.
