I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 3 and now I am 17! I was the first of three to be diagnosed in my family. Growing up with diabetes there have been many struggles and amazing opportunities, such as the insulin pump and CGM. When I was 3 I was doing [insulin] shots and then they created the Animas pump. Now they don’t make Animas pumps and I have a CGM and Tandem pump and they are so helpful.
Some struggles are when I’m getting fit for my costume and I have to figure out where to put my pump, not being able to drink in costume and having to drink a juice because I’m low, or even the director misunderstanding what my pump is and telling me to put my phone away.
My diagnosis hasn’t stopped me in any way from doing what I love. I’m an aspiring actress, I have been able to perform in my different theatres, help out backstage, usher, and go to all kinds of parties! Most recently, I created a film about the misconceptions of diabetes for the Easterseals Disability Film Challenge! I directed, wrote, and acted in it. I would love to use my disability as a way to spread awareness for invisible disabilities and overall understanding.
