I’m a 66-year-old person with type 1 diabetes. Diabetes has been the prevalent disease in my family for almost 60 years. The seventh with type 1, my 21-year-old niece, was recently diagnosed. I can remember in the mid-60s and '70s when my mother would wring out my brother's diapers for the coveted five drops of urine mixed with ten drops of water in the test tube and the pill to check whether they were negative or 4+.
