ADA Camp: A Lifelong Connection

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) has been providing support and unforgettable experiences to children living with diabetes through our camps and family retreats since 1949. Each year, we host thousands of campers and their families across the country, offering a unique blend of adventure, education, mentorship, and fun.

Established in 1975, Camp Planet D is a residential camp program for children with diabetes serving 135 children and teens each year. Planet D offers children with diabetes the opportunity to learn how to enjoy a healthy, active lifestyle while managing their diabetes. At camp, children are surrounded by people who face the same challenge of living with diabetes, from fellow campers to adult staff members.

Our long-term collaboration with Children Mercy Hospital (CMH) has led to the program’s continued success. CMH provides medical camp staff, including nurses, endocrinologists, pharmacists, social workers, psychologists, and dietitians. CMH donation of staff time and services for camp provides our campers and their families with peace of mind and the support needed to learn better diabetes self-management skills. As a result, our campers leave camp with increased self-confidence, independence, and improved diabetes management. 

 

 

*Financial Assistance Available. No child will ever be turned away from camp due to cost. If the camp fee is a roadblock for your family, the American Diabetes Association® offers financial assistance. Nearly half of our families receive financial assistance to cover part or the full cost of camp.

Camp Director: Monica Montgomery
Monica Montgomery

Monica Montgomery is a camp director living in New York. Monica grew up attending ADA Camp Aspire and has worked there in a number of positions. Working in a camp setting for eight years, she has served many populations, including the diabetes community and people living with disabilities. She feels strongly about providing camp programs to these populations, fostering a sense of community among youth and teaching self-advocacy skills.

Medical Director: Dr. Ryan McDonough

Dr. Ryan McDonough earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Creighton University in 2006 and later earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Des Moines University. He completed his general pediatrics residency and pediatric endocrinology and diabetes fellowship at Children’s Mercy, Kansas City, where he joined the faculty in 2016. Dr. McDonough serves as senior medical director and chief medical informatics officer for health informatics and is committed to improving care for children with diabetes through innovation and technology.

When to Register

  • Ski & snowboard camps: Open now

How to Register

  • Online. Select the “Register Now” button at the top of your camp page to start the application process.
  • Print. If you prefer a paper application, you can request one by emailing campsupport@ (include your name, address, and desired camp).

What You’ll Need to Get Started

To be best prepared for the registration application, assemble the following information:

  • Child(ren)’s height, weight
  • Medical immunization information
  • Insurance information (carrier, policy number, name of primary insured)
  • Emergency contacts with phone numbers (other than parent/guardian)
  • Type(s) of insulin used, includes pre-mix insulin, if applicable
  • Make/model of insulin pump, if applicable
  • Make/model of continuous glucose monitor (CGM), if applicable
  • Dexcom login/password, if applicable
  • Non-diabetes medications and dosages

Counselors-in-Training (CIT)/Leaders-in-Training (LIT)

Our CIT and LIT programs offer teens the unique opportunity to transition from camper to counselor. We offer training to develop leadership, character, and work skills.

  • Age: 16-17 (ages can range by camp)
  • Application: Apply through our camper registration portal. A parent or guardian must start and complete the application.
  • Selection:  Applicants are selected based on their application, personal references, and an interview.

Why did I receive a “Camper not eligible” message?

  • The most common reason for this message is an incorrect birthdate. Double-check your child's birthdate and make necessary corrections. Typically, applicants must be 16 or 17 years old.

  • Full price: This is the actual cost for camp attendance. Families who can pay the full amount may select this option.
  • ADA-sponsored price: The ADA subsidizes 50% of the full camp price. This discounted rate is thanks to the generous support of sponsors, partners, and donors.

  • Financial assistance: Additional assistance is available to qualifying families who cannot afford the discounted sponsored price. No child will ever be turned away from camp due to cost. Half our families receive financial assistance which pays for a portion or the full cost of camp

All payments and final paperwork are due 30 days before the start of camp. If paperwork or payment is not received, your child will lose their spot at camp.

Medical Staff at Camp

  • All health professionals working at ADA camps are licensed in the state where the camp is held. The majority are also involved in diabetes care in their local community on a year-round basis.
  • The safety of our campers is our number one priority. Our camp team of clinicians provides round-the-clock care so families have peace of mind while their children are at camp.

Mobile Phone Policy for Diabetes Technology

  • Mobile devices used ONLY as a medical management tool will be supported at ADA Camp.
  • Mobile devices include mobile phones, smartwatches, tablets, or other similar devices. Parents/guardians will be asked to disable share functions while campers are in the care of ADA medical staff. We also ask parents/guardians to not contact their camper directly or make medical decisions while at camp as the data may be delayed due to disruptions of mobile service and/or Wi-Fi connections.
  • General mobile phone usage not connected to diabetes technology (e.g., Dexcom, Omnipod) is not allowed.

COVID-19 Guidelines

The COVID-19 vaccine will not be required in 2025 but is highly recommended at all camps. Additional health care policies and procedures will be available in the ADA Camper Handbook.

Can my child attend more than one ADA Camp? If so, is there a discount?

  • Yes, your child may attend more than one ADA Camp in a summer.
  • There is not a special discount for registering for more than one ADA Camp.

Can we request my camper bunk with their friends?

  • All cabin groups are assigned based on camper ages.
  • Special cabin requests can be made at the time of registration but are not guaranteed.

Packing, Pickup, Dropoff

  • For camp-specific details, review your ADA Camper Handbook. These typically arrive 30 days prior to your camp start date. Please check your email for messages from your camp director.
  • Feel free to send any additional questions or inquires to campsupport@. Please allow 24‒48 hours for a response.

Can my child’s sibling who doesn’t have diabetes attend camp? 

  • A few ADA camps do allow for siblings who do not have diabetes to attend, but this is on a camp-by-camp basis if there is space available.
  • Our first responsibility is to serving children with diabetes and spots are reserved for these campers.

Camp Rainbow is a day camp where campers enjoy activities like swimming, arts and crafts, games, and diabetes education, all while building friendships and confidence. 

Camp Rainbow is a lifeline for children with diabetes to develop the critical skills needed to thrive while managing this disease. Attending summer camp helps children develop social skills, self-respect, and lifelong friendships. We give kids the opportunity to meet other kids just like them while fostering independence, building self-confidence, and gaining an awareness of a healthy lifestyle through education, nutrition, exercise, emotional wellbeing and blood glucose (blood sugar) management.

Camp Director: Tyler Lehman
Tyler Lehman

Tyler Lehman is a camp director living in California. A California native, Tyler graduated with a degree in recreation and parks management from Sacramento State. She has over 15 years of experience in camping and out-of-school programs, including Disney Cruise Lines, a family camp near Yosemite National Park with the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department, and the YMCA in Washington, DC, and Southwest Florida. Tyler's passions include long-distance running, hiking, and traveling.

Medical Director: Dr. Sheila Gunn

Dr. Sheila Gunn is a pediatric endocrinologist at Texas Children’s Hospital, where she has practiced for more than 30 years in the Division of Pediatric Diabetes and Endocrinology. Her research has contributed to landmark studies in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, including TrialNet prevention trials and the TODAY trials. Dr. Gunn has been deeply involved with Camp Rainbow since her fellowship, serving as medical staff and now as medical director for the past 30 years. She is dedicated to ensuring camp is a safe, fun, and educational experience where children learn more about their diabetes and gain confidence in their own diabetes care.

Camp Sandcastle Family Weekend

Camp Sandcastle was established in 1992 and has served over 700 campers. It is a lifeline for children with diabetes to develop the critical skills needed to thrive while managing this disease. 

Attending summer camp helps children develop social skills, self-respect, and lifelong friendships. We give kids the opportunity to meet other kids just like them while fostering independence, building self-confidence, and gaining an awareness of a healthy lifestyle through education, nutrition, exercise, emotional wellbeing, and blood glucose (blood sugar) management.

Held at Camp Aranzazu in Rockport, TX, this American Camping Association-certified camp is held in a woodland setting. It is a wonderful place to commune with nature just outside Copano Bay where campers will enjoy kayaking, fishing, ziplining, and tons of other fun activities.

Jordan camp director
Camp Director: Jordan Tellock

Jordan Tellock is a camp director living in California. Jordan has worked in the camp/youth development field for seven years. She grew up attending camp each summer and truly values the impact camp experiences have on young people. Jordan is passionate about all children having access to camp, allowing them to experience the camp magic while growing in supportive communities! When not at camp, she enjoys paddle boarding, reading, and hiking.  

Medical Director: Jim Penn

Jim Penn has worked with Camp Sandcastle for a number of years.  He practices as a Nurse Practitioner at Children's Health/UT Southwestern Pediatric Endocrinology clinic. Jim started as a registered nurse in the ICU in 2001 and transitioned to the diabetes educator role in 2004 and then to the Nurse Practitioner role in 2007.  He loves his job and working with the pediatric population and their families as they navigate the journey of living with diabetes. Jim has been navigating the personal journey of living with type 1 diabetes since 1982, along with his older brother, nephew and brother-in-law. He's inspired and encouraged everyday by the people he sees.

What You’ll Need to Get Started

To be best prepared for the registration application, assemble the following information:

  • Child(ren)’s height, weight
  • Medical immunization information
  • Insurance information (carrier, policy number, name of primary insured)
  • Emergency contacts with phone numbers (other than parent/guardian)
  • Type(s) of insulin used, includes pre-mix insulin, if applicable
  • Make/model of insulin pump, if applicable
  • Make/model of continuous glucose monitor (CGM), if applicable

Counselors-in-Training (CIT)/Leaders-in-Training (LIT)

Our CIT and LIT programs offer teens the unique opportunity to transition from camper to counselor. We offer training to develop leadership, character, and work skills.

  • Age: 16-17 (ages can range by camp)
  • Application: Apply through our camper registration portal. A parent or guardian must start and complete the application.
  • Selection:  Applicants are selected based on their application, personal references, and an interview.

Why did I receive a “Camper not eligible” message?

  • The most common reason for this message is an incorrect birthdate. Double-check your child's birthdate and make necessary corrections. Typically, applicants must be 16 or 17 years old.

  • Full price: This is the actual cost for camp attendance. Families who can pay the full amount may select this option.
  • ADA-sponsored price: The ADA subsidizes 50% of the full camp price. This discounted rate is thanks to the generous support of sponsors, partners, and donors.

  • Financial assistance: Additional assistance is available to qualifying families who cannot afford the discounted sponsored price. No child will ever be turned away from camp due to cost. Half our families receive financial assistance which pays for a portion or the full cost of camp

Medical Staff at Camp

  • All health professionals working at ADA camps are licensed in the state where the camp is held. The majority are also involved in diabetes care in their local community on a year-round basis.
  • The safety of our campers is our number one priority. Our camp team of clinicians provides round-the-clock care so families have peace of mind while their children are at camp.

Mobile Phone Policy for Diabetes Technology

  • Mobile devices used ONLY as a medical management tool will be supported at ADA Camp.
  • Mobile devices include mobile phones, smartwatches, tablets, or other similar devices. Parents/guardians will be asked to disable share functions while campers are in the care of ADA medical staff. We also ask parents/guardians to not contact their camper directly or make medical decisions while at camp as the data may be delayed due to disruptions of mobile service and/or Wi-Fi connections.
  • General mobile phone usage not connected to diabetes technology (e.g., Dexcom, Omnipod) is not allowed.

COVID-19 Guidelines

The COVID-19 vaccine will not be required in 2025 but is highly recommended at all camps. Additional health care policies and procedures will be available in the ADA Camper Handbook.

Can my child attend more than one ADA Camp? If so, is there a discount?

  • Yes, your child may attend more than one ADA Camp in a summer.
  • There is not a special discount for registering for more than one ADA Camp.

Can we request my camper bunk with their friends?

  • All cabin groups are assigned based on camper ages.
  • Special cabin requests can be made at the time of registration but are not guaranteed.

Packing, Pickup, Dropoff

  • For camp-specific details, review your ADA Camper Handbook. These typically arrive 30 days prior to your camp start date. Please check your email for messages from your camp director.

Can my child’s sibling who doesn’t have diabetes attend camp? 

  • A few ADA camps do allow for siblings who do not have diabetes to attend, but this is on a camp-by-camp basis if there is space available.

Founded in 1982 by Dr. Jennifer Najjar in Nashville, Tennessee, Camp Sugar Falls has welcomed more than 2,000 campers and continues to be a cherished tradition for children and teens living with type 1 diabetes. Hosted at YMCA Camp Widjiwagan in Antioch, just outside of Nashville, Camp Sugar Falls offers both day and overnight camp options, giving families flexibility while ensuring every camper enjoys a safe, supportive, and empowering experience. While at camp, campers can swim, create art, conquer the rock wall, and participate in a wide range of exciting outdoor activities, all while building friendships and connecting with peers who truly understand their journey. 

The camp also serves as a hands-on training opportunity for future medical professionals—including medical students, pediatric residents, endocrine fellows, pharmacy students, and nursing students—who work alongside an expert medical team from Vanderbilt Medical Center to provide exceptional diabetes care.

Camp Director: Tyler Lehman
Tyler Lehman

Tyler Lehman is a camp director living in California. A California native, Tyler graduated with a degree in recreation and parks management from Sacramento State. She has over 15 years of experience in camping and out-of-school programs, including Disney Cruise Lines, a family camp near Yosemite National Park with the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department, and the YMCA in Washington, DC, and Southwest Florida. Tyler's passions include long-distance running, hiking, and traveling.

Medical Director: Dr. Cassie Brady

Dr. Cassie Brady is excited to be joining the Sugar Falls team! She is a pediatric endocrinologist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She has camp experience in three states and credits diabetes camp for drawing her to pediatric endocrinology.  She attended Indiana University School of Medicine before coming to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for her pediatric residency. One of her favorite memories of residency was at an overnight diabetes camp, where she was the medical provider on an overnight canoeing trip. Her pediatric endocrinology fellowship was at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital where she was on the diabetes camp committee. She spent three summers at the overnight camp there.  Her favorite part of camp is being outside and watching campers try new things for the first time! She loves spending time with her three children and husband and would consider herself an avid long-distance runner.

Since 1949, Camp Triangle D has served thousands of campers aged 9–12 living with diabetes. Camp Triangle D is held at YMCA Camp Duncan, an American Camp Association-certified camp. This woodland setting is a wonderful place to commune with nature in Northern Illinois where campers will enjoy crafts, boating, swimming, team and ropes courses, and tons of other fun activities.

Attending summer camp helps children develop social skills, self-respect, and lifelong friendships. We give kids the opportunity to meet other kids just like them while fostering independence, building self-confidence, and gaining an awareness of a healthy lifestyle through education, nutrition, exercise, emotional wellbeing, and blood glucose (blood sugar) management.

ADA camp director Blayze Wood
Camp Director: Blayze Wood

Blayze Wood is a camp director based in the Twin Cities of Minnesota. Before jumping into the camp world full-time, he was a high school math teacher. Blayze grew up going to ADA Camp Needlepoint and has spent the last 10 summers working at a variety of ADA camps. He’s a big believer in the magic of camp. To Blayze, ADA camps are where kids with diabetes can just be themselves, make awesome memories, and build lifelong friendships. Outside of camp life, you’ll probably find him on a golf course or hanging out with his wife and their two dogs, Rowan and Oakley. 

Medical Director: Dr. Juan Lado

Dr. Juan Lado is a pediatric endocrinologist at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. He first attended Camp Freedom in 2017 as a pediatric endocrinology fellow and has volunteered at Camp Triangle D since 2018. After several years of involvement, he joined the camp’s leadership team in 2022 and remains an active member of the planning committee. Dr. Lado values the unique opportunity ADA Camp provides for children with diabetes to connect, learn, and thrive together.

  • Medical immunization information

  • Type(s) of insulin used, includes pre-mix insulin, if applicable

Counselors-in-Training (CIT)/Leaders-in-Training (LIT)

Our CIT and LIT programs offer teens the unique opportunity to transition from camper to counselor. We offer training to develop leadership, character, and work skills.

  • Age: 16-17 (ages can range by camp)
  • Application: Apply through our camper registration portal. A parent or guardian must start and complete the application.
  • Selection:  Applicants are selected based on their application, personal references, and an interview.

Why did I receive a “Camper not eligible” message?

  • The most common reason for this message is an incorrect birthdate. Double-check your child's birthdate and make necessary corrections. Typically, applicants must be 16 or 17 years old.

Medical Staff at Camp

  • All health professionals working at ADA camps are licensed in the state where the camp is held. The majority are also involved in diabetes care in their local community on a year-round basis.
  • The safety of our campers is our number one priority. Our camp team of clinicians provides round-the-clock care so families have peace of mind while their children are at camp.

Mobile Phone Policy for Diabetes Technology

  • Mobile devices used ONLY as a medical management tool will be supported at ADA Camp.
  • Mobile devices include mobile phones, smartwatches, tablets, or other similar devices. Parents/guardians will be asked to disable share functions while campers are in the care of ADA medical staff. We also ask parents/guardians to not contact their camper directly or make medical decisions while at camp as the data may be delayed due to disruptions of mobile service and/or Wi-Fi connections.
  • General mobile phone usage not connected to diabetes technology (e.g., Dexcom, Omnipod) is not allowed.

COVID-19 Guidelines

The COVID-19 vaccine will not be required in 2025 but is highly recommended at all camps. Additional health care policies and procedures will be available in the ADA Camper Handbook.

Can my child attend more than one ADA Camp? If so, is there a discount?

  • Yes, your child may attend more than one ADA Camp in a summer.
  • There is not a special discount for registering for more than one ADA Camp.

Can we request my camper bunk with their friends?

  • All cabin groups are assigned based on camper ages.
  • Special cabin requests can be made at the time of registration but are not guaranteed.

Packing, Pickup, Dropoff

Camp Wana Kura is a day camp established in 1990. Camp Wana Kura is a lifeline for children with diabetes to develop the critical skills needed to thrive while managing this disease. Campers have a blast participating in swimming, gaga ball, rock climbing, crafts, gymnastics, a splash pad, games, and more at this day camp. 

Attending summer camp helps children develop social skills, self-respect, and lifelong friendships. Jordan camp director
Camp Director: Jordan Tellock

Jordan Tellock is a camp director living in California. Jordan has worked in the camp/youth development field for seven years. She grew up attending camp each summer and truly values the impact camp experiences have on young people. Jordan is passionate about all children having access to camp, allowing them to experience the camp magic while growing in supportive communities! When not at camp, she enjoys paddle boarding, reading, and hiking.  

Medical Director: Dr. Michael Gottschalk 

Dr. Gottschalk has been chief of pediatric endocrinology at the University of California San Diego and Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego since 2000. His work includes clinical research in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. During the 1990s, he served as medical director at Camp Triangle D in Chicago and now serves on the camp committee and as medical director for Camp Wana Kura in San Diego. Dr. Gottschalk is passionate about the positive impact camp has on children living with diabetes and remains dedicated to supporting their care and confidence.

Attending camp helps children develop social skills, self-respect, and lifelong friendships. Campers meet others just like them while encouraging independence, building self-confidence, and gaining an awareness of a healthy lifestyle through education, nutrition, exercise, blood glucose (blood sugar) management, and emotional wellbeing.

Camp Director: Joe Esten
JoeEsten

Joe Esten is a camp director living in Wisconsin. Joe has worked in the camp/youth programs industry for the past 10 years and has had the privilege of working with kids worldwide. He feels strongly about the opportunity for kids to be kids and loves to make sure each camper smiles about something every day at camp. Joe’s favorite camp activities include singing songs, making skits, and especially playing tricks on the other counselors. When Joe is not working in the camp world, he enjoys being outdoors, hiking, kayaking, and traveling. 

Medical Director: Dr. Todd Nebesio 

Dr. Todd Nebesio is a pediatric endocrinologist at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health in Indianapolis. He has been part of Camp John Warvel’s medical team since 2000 and has served as co-medical director since 2007. Dr. Nebesio, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 13, believes camp offers children with diabetes a safe and empowering place to have fun, build friendships, and connect with others who understand their daily challenges. He encourages all his patients to attend camp to share in this transformative experience.

Medical Director: Dr. Linda DiMeglio 

Dr. DiMeglio is a professor and the chief of the Division of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetology in the Department of Pediatrics at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, Indiana. She leads research teams focused on preventing type 1 diabetes, preserving beta cell function, and improving quality of life for people living with the condition. Dr. DiMeglio serves as vice chair for Type 1 Diabetes TrialNet, co-principal investigator of the DiabDocs Physician Scientist Development Program, and co-chair of the International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes Guidelines Editorial Board. She has been medical director of Camp John Warvel since 1998 and considers camp “part of her DNA.” She believes camp offers numerous benefits for campers, families, and staff who work together to provide care and community.

  • Child(ren)’s height, weight
  • Medical immunization information

  • Type(s) of insulin used, includes pre-mix insulin, if applicable

Counselors-in-Training (CIT)/Leaders-in-Training (LIT)

Our CIT and LIT programs offer teens the unique opportunity to transition from camper to counselor. We offer training to develop leadership, character, and work skills.

  • Age: 16-17 (ages can range by camp)
  • Application: Apply through our camper registration portal. A parent or guardian must start and complete the application.
  • Selection:  Applicants are selected based on their application, personal references, and an interview.

Why did I receive a “Camper not eligible” message?

  • The most common reason for this message is an incorrect birthdate. Double-check your child's birthdate and make necessary corrections. Typically, applicants must be 16 or 17 years old.

  • Full price: This is the actual cost for camp attendance. Families who can pay the full amount may select this option.
  • ADA-sponsored price: The ADA subsidizes 50% of the full camp price. This discounted rate is thanks to the generous support of sponsors, partners, and donors.

  • Financial assistance: Additional assistance is available to qualifying families who cannot afford the discounted sponsored price. No child will ever be turned away from camp due to cost. Half our families receive financial assistance which pays for a portion or the full cost of camp

Medical Staff at Camp

  • All health professionals working at ADA camps are licensed in the state where the camp is held. The majority are also involved in diabetes care in their local community on a year-round basis.
  • The safety of our campers is our number one priority. Our camp team of clinicians provides round-the-clock care so families have peace of mind while their children are at camp.

Mobile Phone Policy for Diabetes Technology

  • Mobile devices used ONLY as a medical management tool will be supported at ADA Camp.
  • Mobile devices include mobile phones, smartwatches, tablets, or other similar devices. Parents/guardians will be asked to disable share functions while campers are in the care of ADA medical staff. We also ask parents/guardians to not contact their camper directly or make medical decisions while at camp as the data may be delayed due to disruptions of mobile service and/or Wi-Fi connections.
  • General mobile phone usage not connected to diabetes technology (e.g., Dexcom, Omnipod) is not allowed.

COVID-19 Guidelines

The COVID-19 vaccine will not be required in 2025 but is highly recommended at all camps. Additional health care policies and procedures will be available in the ADA Camper Handbook.

Can my child attend more than one ADA Camp? If so, is there a discount?

  • Yes, your child may attend more than one ADA Camp in a summer.
  • There is not a special discount for registering for more than one ADA Camp.

Can we request my camper bunk with their friends?

  • All cabin groups are assigned based on camper ages.
  • Special cabin requests can be made at the time of registration but are not guaranteed.

Packing, Pickup, Dropoff

  • For camp-specific details, review your ADA Camper Handbook. These typically arrive 30 days prior to your camp start date. Please check your email for messages from your camp director.

ADA camp director Blayze Wood
Camp Director: Blayze Wood

Blayze Wood is a camp director based in the Twin Cities of Minnesota. Before jumping into the camp world full-time, he was a high school math teacher. Blayze grew up going to ADA Camp Needlepoint and has spent the last 10 summers working at a variety of ADA camps. He’s a big believer in the magic of camp. To Blayze, ADA camps are where kids with diabetes can just be themselves, make awesome memories, and build lifelong friendships. Outside of camp life, you’ll probably find him on a golf course or hanging out with his wife and their two dogs, Rowan and Oakley. 

Medical Director: Dr. Kalie Tommerdahl

Dr. Kalie Tommerdahl is a pediatric endocrinologist and physician-scientist at Seattle Children’s Hospital and the University of Washington Medicine Diabetes Institute, where she studies type 1 and type 2 diabetes through clinical trials. She has attended diabetes camps across Chicago, Columbus, and Denver, and now serves as medical director for Camp Connection in Seattle. When not at camp, she enjoys reading, playing board games and cards, spending time with family and friends, and taking walks with her dog, Gizmo.

Campers spend their days swimming, playing sports, creating art, exploring the Alvin Sherman Library, and participating in exciting group activities—all while learning to confidently manage their diabetes with guidance from experienced medical professionals.

The camp’s medical team includes endocrinologists, nurses, and diabetes educators from offices across Broward County, particularly Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital and Broward Health. Camp All-Stars also partners with NSU’s Department of Psychology, giving university students hands-on experience working with children in a recreational and developmental setting. Together, these partnerships ensure every camper receives exceptional care, meaningful mentorship, and an unforgettable summer experience.

Camp Director: Tyler Lehman

Tyler Lehman is a camp director living in California. A California native, Tyler graduated with a degree in recreation and parks management from Sacramento State. She has over 15 years of experience in camping and out-of-school programs, including Disney Cruise Lines, a family camp near Yosemite National Park with the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department, and the YMCA in Washington, DC, and Southwest Florida. Tyler's passions include long-distance running, hiking, and traveling.

Medical Directors: Lisa Kenigsberg Fechter and Lital Reitblat

Lisa Kenigsberg Fechter, MD, is a pediatric endocrinologist at Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital in Hollywood, Florida. She attended the University of Florida College of Medicine, where she had the opportunity to be a counselor at a diabetes summer camp and first developed her passion for Pediatric Endocrinology. She then completed her Pediatric residency at New York University and Pediatric Endocrinology fellowship at the Children's Hospital at Montefiore. Dr. Kenigsberg Fechter is a big proponent of patient and family education, as she believes that patients have the best outcomes when they have a good understanding of their illness and treatment plan. 

Dr. Lital Reitblat is a board certified pediatric endocrinologist at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood, FL. She graduated from medical school at the University of Florida. She then completed her Pediatric Residency at the University of Miami, followed by her Pediatric Endocrinology Fellowship at Yale University. She was a counselor at the Florida Diabetes Camp as well as being one of the camp doctors at Camp Coral Kids.

Counselors-in-Training (CIT)/Leaders-in-Training (LIT)

Our CIT and LIT programs offer teens the unique opportunity to transition from camper to counselor. We offer training to develop leadership, character, and work skills.

  • Application: Apply through our camper registration portal. A parent or guardian must start and complete the application.
  • Selection:  Applicants are selected based on their application, personal references, and an interview.

  • The most common reason for this message is an incorrect birthdate. Double-check your child's birthdate and make necessary corrections. Typically, applicants must be 16 or 17 years old.

Medical Staff at Camp

  • All health professionals working at ADA camps are licensed in the state where the camp is held. The majority are also involved in diabetes care in their local community on a year-round basis.
  • The safety of our campers is our number one priority. Our camp team of clinicians provides round-the-clock care so families have peace of mind while their children are at camp.

Mobile Phone Policy for Diabetes Technology

  • Mobile devices used ONLY as a medical management tool will be supported at ADA Camp.
  • Mobile devices include mobile phones, smartwatches, tablets, or other similar devices. Parents/guardians will be asked to disable share functions while campers are in the care of ADA medical staff. We also ask parents/guardians to not contact their camper directly or make medical decisions while at camp as the data may be delayed due to disruptions of mobile service and/or Wi-Fi connections.
  • General mobile phone usage not connected to diabetes technology (e.g., Dexcom, Omnipod) is not allowed.

COVID-19 Guidelines

The COVID-19 vaccine will not be required in 2025 but is highly recommended at all camps. Additional health care policies and procedures will be available in the ADA Camper Handbook.

Can my child attend more than one ADA Camp? If so, is there a discount?

  • Yes, your child may attend more than one ADA Camp in a summer.
  • There is not a special discount for registering for more than one ADA Camp.

Can we request my camper bunk with their friends?

  • All cabin groups are assigned based on camper ages.
  • Special cabin requests can be made at the time of registration but are not guaranteed.

Packing, Pickup, Dropoff

Re-established in 2025, Camp Confidence at the Indian Boundary YMCA is a vibrant and empowering summer experience designed for children aged 5 to 12. This fun-filled camp offers a wide array of exciting activities, including outdoor sports, arts and crafts, swimming, and more, all in a supportive environment that promotes confidence, friendship, and healthy living for kids managing diabetes.

ADA Camp is a lifeline for children living with diabetes to develop the critical skills needed to thrive while managing their diabetes. Attending camp helps children develop social skills, self-respect, and lifelong friendships. Campers meet others just like them while encouraging independence, building self-confidence, and gaining an awareness of a healthy lifestyle through education, nutrition, exercise, blood glucose (blood sugar) management, and emotional wellbeing.

Camp Director: Jordan Tellock

Jordan Tellock is a camp director living in California. Jordan has worked in the camp/youth development field for seven years. She grew up attending camp each summer and truly values the impact camp experiences have on young people. Jordan is passionate about all children having access to camp, allowing them to experience the camp magic while growing in supportive communities! When not at camp, she enjoys paddle boarding, reading, and hiking.  

 

Medical Director: Brian Bamberger, MD  

Brian Bamberger, MD, is a combined internal medicine and pediatrics doctor with a specialization in pediatric hospital medicine. He trained at the University of Illinois College of Medicine and continues to work at the Peoria campus, training medical students and residents. Dr. Bamberger is so excited to be part of camp this year as he grew up in Glen Ellyn, IL, so Camp Confidence is in his backyard! He loves camp—having worked at several ADA camps since 2016—and enjoys to run and be outdoors.
