ADA camp director Becky Barnett
Camp Director: Becky Barnett

Becky Barnett hails from just outside of the Twin Cities in Minnesota and has been an ADA camp director for the last 24 years. The highlight of her job is getting to work with all the campers, staff, and their families. She does admit that she also enjoys the camp songs, skits, and grilled cheese. A piece of advice she likes to give all families: I know sending your child to camp can be a difficult thing to do, especially when that child has diabetes. Let me assure you this is one of the greatest gifts you can give not only to your camper, but yourself! Regardless, if your child attends one of our day camps or our overnight programs, my goal is to make sure every child has a SAFE and FUN experience during their time at camp. Whether it’s your first year or tenth year, I like to remind families to take this time to RELAX. I know this may be hard (especially the first year), but take some time not to worry about 2:00 a.m. blood glucose, questioning if you packed a snack, or wondering if you have an extra vial of insulin—just in case! Also, if you have other children, take some time to give them some extra attention and go out for ice cream and don’t count any carbs!

Medical Director: Dr. Alan Parsa

Dr. Alan Parsa is an adult endocrinologist that has been part of He Ola Ke Keiki since its return in 2018 and is also the board chair in Hawaii. His favorite thing about camp is seeing the kids be kids! 'Camp is important to me because the support and education that the campers gain from camp is an amazing addition to what they learn from just seeing their provider!'

Medical Director: Drizza Tabisola-Nuesca

Drizza is a Pediatric Endocrinology Nurse Practitioner at Hawaii Pacific health Medical Group. She focuses on Type 1 diabetes and keeps up with the technology of Hybrid Closed Loop Pumps and continuous glucose monitors. Drizza sees pediatric patients throughout the Hawaiian Islands. She is passionate about Diabetes Camp and has been a part of Hawaii ADA camp since it restarted in 2018. She has been a part of Diabetes Camps in California & in Washington State. She totally believes in the “magic of camp” & how it can be life changing for all.

Camp Costs

Camp registration prices vary by location (see "Dates & Rates" on your camp page). We understand every family's financial situation is unique. No child will ever be turned away from camp due to cost. We offer flexible pricing options and financial assistance:

  • Full price: This is the actual cost for camp attendance. Families who can pay the full amount may select this option.
  • ADA-sponsored price: The ADA subsidizes 50% of the full camp price. This discounted rate is thanks to the generous support of sponsors, partners, and donors.

Financial Assistance

  • Financial assistance: Additional assistance is available to qualifying families who cannot afford the discounted sponsored price. No child will ever be turned away from camp due to cost. Half our families receive financial assistance which pays for a portion or the full cost of camp

Medical Staff at Camp

  • All health professionals working at ADA camps are licensed in the state where the camp is held. The majority are also involved in diabetes care in their local community on a year-round basis.
  • The safety of our campers is our number one priority. Our camp team of clinicians provides round-the-clock care so families have peace of mind while their children are at camp.
  • To learn more about our medical director above, review the “Camp Staff” tab.

Mobile Phone Policy for Diabetes Technology

  • Mobile devices used ONLY as a medical management tool will be supported at ADA Camp.
  • Mobile devices include mobile phones, smartwatches, tablets, or other similar devices. Parents/guardians will be asked to disable share functions while campers are in the care of ADA medical staff. We also ask parents/guardians to not contact their camper directly or make medical decisions while at camp as the data may be delayed due to disruptions of mobile service and/or Wi-Fi connections.
  • General mobile phone usage not connected to diabetes technology (e.g., Dexcom, Omnipod) is not allowed.

COVID-19 Guidelines

The COVID-19 vaccine will not be required in 2025 but is highly recommended at all camps. Additional health care policies and procedures will be available in the ADA Camper Handbook.
