The American Diabetes Association® (ADA) is thrilled to present the fourth annual Kiss a Pig Gala in New Orleans on July 26. This black-tie event honors the role pigs played in diabetes treatment. All proceeds from the gala support the ADA’s mission to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.
Each year, industry leaders unite to celebrate the candidates who have been raising funds throughout the year for diabetes research. Ten candidates are selected to participate in the event. Each candidate runs a peer-to-peer fundraising campaign, and the top fundraiser earns the privilege of kissing a pig at the event.
“This tradition has been our way of showing appreciation for the pig’s heroic role in the diabetes community. Before the insulin we know now, millions of lives relied on insulin from animals. Kiss a Pig allows us to celebrate the past, and how far we’ve come in the fight to end diabetes. We thank our candidates and generous sponsors for making this gala a success year after year,” said Jeanne McKay, the ADA’s Louisiana executive director.
Approximately 520,500 adults in Louisiana, or 13.2% of the adult population, have diagnosed diabetes. Additionally, an estimated 33,000 adults in Louisiana are diagnosed with diabetes each year.
This year’s gala is made possible by our presenting sponsor, Phelps Dunbar, LLP.
