The award recognizes outstanding diabetes professionals from resource-limited groups who have made significant contributions to diabetes research

The American Diabetes Association® (ADA) presented the inaugural Dr. Felicia Hill-Briggs Health Equity Trailblazer in Diabetes Award to this year’s recipient, Dr. Tiffany Gary-Webb.

The award honors Dr. Hill-Briggs’ legacy and recognizes outstanding health professionals from resource-limited racial and ethnic groups working to further diabetes research.

Dr. Gary-Webb currently serves as a professor and a dean at the University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health. She has also held leadership positions in national organizations that include the ADA, the American Public Health Association, and the Council on Black Health.

Her work has been dedicated to addressing reduced access to care for people living with chronic disease, particularly diabetes, within resource-limited communities.

Selected by an external review committee composed of clinicians, scientists, diabetes care and education specialists, and other health professionals in the diabetes health space, this prestigious award carries forward the legacy of the late Dr. Felicia Camille Hill-Briggs, a diabetes behavioral scientist who dedicated her career to eliminating health care roadblocks for populations at higher risk for diabetes. Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age nine, Dr. Hill-Briggs advocated for evidence-based interventions that continue to shape diabetes care today.

Following her passing in June 2023, the ADA established the Felicia Hill-Briggs Trailblazers in Health Equity Award to honor her legacy by supporting individuals working to eliminate health care roadblocks and improve outcomes for resource-limited communities affected by diabetes.

By fostering a more inclusive health care system, the award elevates evidence-based interventions and advanced approaches to diabetes management, while also ensuring care for all in diabetes treatment and prevention.
