Urges Members of Congress to Maintain Robust Federal Funding for Diabetes Research

Today, the American Diabetes Association® (ADA) launched a Day of Action calling on scientists, clinicians, and Diabetes Advocates to join the ADA in urging Congress to maintain robust federal funding for diabetes research. Congress is currently contemplating cuts to funding that would undermine diabetes research aimed at finding a cure and improved treatments for the over 38 million Americans living with diabetes and the nearly 98 million living with prediabetes.

“Thousands of scientists and clinicians are gathered at the ADA’s 85th Scientific Sessions in Chicago, providing the perfect opportunity for this community to join with Diabetes Advocates to lend their voices to this critical Day of Action,” said Lisa Murdock, the ADA’s chief advocacy officer. The ADA’s Scientific Sessions is the world’s largest diabetes meeting, convening more than 11,000 attendees to share cutting-edge scientific discoveries and advancements in diabetes care and innovation.

The proposals being considered by Congress threaten the funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). This funding currently supports an estimated 1,400 research projects being conducted in 42 states, including 450 clinical trials.

“The United States should be a lead driver of research aimed at finding a cure for diabetes and innovative treatments that enable people living with the disease to be healthier and free from disabling and life-threatening complications associated with the disease,” Murdock went on to say.  “We encourage all Americans to join us in supporting this call to action.”
