On Saturday, September 20, the American Diabetes Association® (ADA) is hosting its flagship fundraising event of the year at Nova Southeastern University to raise awareness and provide critical support for those affected by diabetes. Step Out®: South Florida will bring together the diabetes community, volunteers, and advocates for a walk for people of all ages and abilities.
Approximately 2,317,800 adults in Florida, or 10% of the adult population, have diagnosed diabetes. Every year, an estimated 139,000 adults in Florida are diagnosed with diabetes.
The walk benefits diabetes research, education, management, and prevention, supporting the ADA’s mission to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. Increasingly, this includes those living with obesity, as the Obesity Association™, a division of the ADA, expands outreach and education.
“I’m inspired by the way Step Out brings our community together around a cause that touches so many lives,” said Eleni Sakis, the ADA’s associate director of development in South Florida. “This event is not only about raising critical funds for research and resources, but also about showing those living with diabetes that they are not alone. We’re walking beside them toward a healthier future.”
The festivities will begin with music, a kids craft station, and a wellness village, leading into an opening ceremony to celebrate those coming together to walk for better health, a cure, and a brighter future. The community is invited to participate in a morning filled with engaging activities for everyone, wear red ADA gear, and bring banners and signs to show support for the cause.
The wellness village will include valuable diabetes resources on-site and advice on diabetes management and prevention for attendees.
Diabetes isn't just a disease—it's an epidemic, over 38 million Americans are living with diabetes and its devastating consequences. Events like this are crucial to raise awareness and provide resources to support those living with diabetes.
This year’s Step Out Walk is sponsored by Novo Nordisk. Registration for the event is free. To learn more about the 2025 Step Out: South Florida and register, visit /StepOutFL.
