Among ADA's top priorities is securing federal funding for research and prevention programs and ensuring the sustainability of the enterprises that carry out this work. When we see threats that jeopardize diabetes research, we respond.
To this end, in collaboration with others in the science and diabetes community, the ADA has driven opposition to a proposed rule that revises the guidelines for federal financial assistance. As of July 1, 2026, over 143,000 comments had been submitted on the proposed rule—a rule that risks undermining the stability, predictability, and integrity of the federal research enterprise. This is an incredible-level of engagement. It is heartening to see the strength of the science and patient advocacy communities when we are united in a common cause.
We invite the ADA community to continue to submit comments on the proposed rule using the ADA’s online tool and to contact your members of Congress to urge them to robustly fund diabetes research. For additional background, the ADA’s official comment on the proposed rule can be found here. The comment period remains open until July 13.
The fight to preserve funding for research continues, and ADA will be engaged throughout every step of the appropriations process. In addition to raising concerns around the proposed rule, the ADA is actively lobbying appropriators throughout the funding process bringing in key stakeholders for in-person and virtual meetings at critical junctures. Recently the ADA issued a statement in response to the FY 2027 House funding package which isn’t commensurate with the growing burden of the disease. The federal government is the largest funder of diabetes research in the U.S., and it is vital that this funding remains robust creating a pipeline of innovation and progress toward a cure and better treatment options.
Let’s keep speaking up on behalf of the 155 million individuals living with diabetes and prediabetes. Your voices and advocacy matter. And we are stronger together.
